Celebrate Walt’s 30th Birthday Bash at Coventry Market

Part of 2-Tone@30 in association with Pete Chambers

On Saturday March 28th, Coventry Market will be hosting a ‘Special’ party to celebrate 30 years of 2-Tone and the famous 2-Tone man Walt Jabsco.

Late March 1979 saw the Independent Rough Trade release of that very first 2-Tone single ‘The Special AKA Gangsters V The Selecter’ a few months later it had been picked up by Chrysalis Records and it was a top ten hit for The Specials, The Selecter and the 2-Tone Record label. What followed was an amazing journey for Coventry, The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat and Madness and not forgetting Walt Jabsco.

To celebrate ‘THE BIRTH OF 2-TONE’, Coventry Market in association with Pete Chambers, will be turning the clock back 30 years in a black and white two tone kind of a way.

·         Ace Face Clothing, the guys who have made the tonic suits the Specials will be wearing on tour next month, will be showing off their amazing designs on the catwalk

·         Special Lynval Golding will be our guest of Honour at the Market, and we may even persuade him to ‘model’ his new Prince of Wales Check suit.

·         Many other 2-Tone guests are expected

·         2-Tone City Clothing are giving us a pre-launch fashion show, with an appearance of Steve ‘Cardboard’ Eaton the face of the First Selecter album.

·         Stand by for the Best rude boy and rude girl competition, come in your best 2-Tone mod- rude boy- skin head clobber and you may just win a prize

·         Giveaway prizes for those who dare to dress in black and white

·         Don’t miss the opening of the new 2-Tone Heritage Stall, including some genuine 2-Tone platinum, gold and silver discs and much much more.

·         Check out 2-Tone jewellery from ‘Hole’, and a book signing from  Mr. 2-Tone himself Pete Chambers, then there’s a chance to buy some of John Coles famous 2-Tone photographs.

·         Did I mention a huge slice of ‘ska’ music, well of course, how could we have a 2-Tone day without the music.

·         Look out for Walt Jabsco on your travels around the market he’s promising to make an appearance.

·         Ben Sherman
